“India’s April 2024 Trade Snapshot: Exports Inch Up, Imports Surge”

India’s merchandise exports in April 2024 increased slightly to USD 34.99 billion from USD 34.62 billion in the same month last year, according to government data released on Wednesday.

Imports also rose to USD 54.09 billion from USD 49.06 billion in April 2023.

The trade deficit, which is the gap between imports and exports, stood at USD 19.1 billion for the month.

During a media briefing on the data, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal stated that the figures indicate a positive start to the new fiscal year and expressed hope for continued growth.

In March 2024, outbound shipments decreased to USD 41.68 billion from USD 41.96 billion a year ago.
