•Budameru receiving inflow of 10,000 cusecs of water from Mylavaram, upper Khammam regions since Tuesday night
• CM Chandrababu directs minister Lokesh to oversee emergency operations in affected areas
The flood flow in Budameru rivulet has surged once again due to incessant rains, prompting authorities to undertake emergency measures at vulnerable points along the embankment. Particularly affected is the Kondapalli Shantinagar area, where Budameru breached its embankment at three locations. Following the breaches, which measured up to 200 meters, the river overflowed into Kavuluru, Eelaprolu Rayanapadu, and Ajith Singinagar, leading to widespread concern.
Irrigation officials are actively engaged in filling the breaches as the floodwaters begin to recede. Mylavaram MLA Vasantha Venkata Krishnaprasad has appealed to the residents in the Budameru catchment area to remain vigilant as the situation is still precarious. The MLA reported that the Budameru is receiving an inflow of 10,000 cusecs of water from the Mylavaram and upper Khammam regions since Tuesday night, causing the embankment at Kondapalli Shantinagar’s Errabudji pond to collapse.
In response to the crisis, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed minister for IT and HRD Nara Lokesh to oversee the emergency operations in the affected areas. Minister Lokesh, along with minister for Water Resources Nimmala Ramanaidu, inspected the ongoing efforts to reinforce the Budameru embankments. They were briefed by officials on the extent of the breaches, the severity of the damage, and the timeline for repairs. Lokesh expressed concern over the lack of maintenance work on the embankments in the past five years, which they identified as a significant factor contributing to the current situation.
They discussed with the authorities the measures needed to expedite the repair process, emphasizing the importance of sealing the breaches in all parallel tunnels swiftly. Lokesh has also directed the mobilization of necessary machinery and supplies on a war footing to ensure the repairs are completed promptly. The relief efforts in Vijayawada, under minister Lokesh’s supervision, are continuing with a sense of urgency, as authorities strive to prevent further breaches and ensure the safety of the local population.
