Vijayawada: Former Supreme Court Justice Jasti Chelameswar issued a heartfelt appeal to the general public, urging them to be vigilant in safeguarding democracy and securing the future of the nation. Speaking at a round table meeting organised by the Citizens for Democracy (CFD) here on Wednesday, Justice Chelameswar emphasised that rules designed for the welfare of the people remain ineffective unless individuals actively participate in the democratic process.
Expressing concern over the prevailing situation in the country, he lamented that the trend where enormous sums of money are required to secure victory in elections, highlighting its perilous implications for society and the nation’s future. “The pursuit of personal gain invariably harms society. It is imperative for people to step up and defend democracy and the rule of law in the country. Failure to do so will result in enduring the consequences of these detrimental practices,” he cautioned.
Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar, secretary of CFD, stressed on the critical importance of free and fair elections in the state amidst the ongoing electoral process. He reiterated the forum’s commitment to advocating for fair elections and raising awareness among the public regarding election procedures, while also pledging to report any violations to the Election Commission.
