Flood inflow increases at Prakasam Barrage, alerts issued

The Capital News

The inflow of flood water to the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada is witnessing a significant rise, following the lifting of gates at the Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar, and Pulichintala projects. Currently, the barrage is receiving an inflow of 2,88,191 cusecs. In response, authorities have released 13,991 cusecs into the canals, while the substantial inflow has necessitated the release of 2,74,200 cusecs into the sea.

This is being managed by raising 30 barrage gates by seven feet and 40 gates by six feet. Officials have heightened their vigilance after the barrage gates were lifted, issuing warnings to residents in low-lying areas to remain cautious. The situation is being closely monitored to prevent any untoward incidents. Meanwhile, in the Eluru district, the flood situation is escalating at the Jangareddygudem Konguvarigudem Errakalva reservoir.

The reservoir, which has a full water level of 83.50 meters, is currently at 82.30 meters, with an inflow of 6,000 cusecs. To manage the situation, 6,500 cusecs of water are being discharged downstream through the four gates of the project. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 4.428 TMCs. Similarly, in the Chintalapudi Mandal of Eluru district, heavy inflows are being recorded at the Nagireddygudem Tammileru Reservoir, with an inflow of 5,256 cusecs and an outflow of 5,688 cusecs.

The reservoir, which has a full water level of 355 feet, currently holds water at 349.49 feet, with a storage capacity of 2.014 TMCs against a full capacity of 3 TMCs. The district’s agency areas are also facing challenges, with hill streams overflowing due to continuous rains.

In Kannapuram, under Koyyalagudem Mandal, the East Canal is experiencing a high flow, leading to severe traffic disruptions in the region. Authorities have issued an advisory urging residents not to attempt crossing the overflowing hill streams, as a precautionary measure.
