A fire broke out at a closed chemical factory in the Dombivli area of Maharashtra’s Thane district on Wednesday morning, according to an official. The chief of Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s disaster management cell, Dipak Nikam, informed PTI that there were no reported casualties so far. He added that there was also an explosion at the unit. Thick smoke billowed from the unit and could be seen from a long distance, Nikam said. The unit is located near Amudan Chemicals, where a massive blast on May 23 claimed 10 lives and left more than 60 persons injured. Nikam stated that the fire erupted at around 10 am on Wednesday at the factory, which is situated in the Dombivli MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) area. No injuries were reported so far. Three fire engines and an ambulance were rushed to the spot, and firefighting efforts were ongoing, he said, adding that the cause of the fire was not yet known.
