Neet Counselling :
In the NEET counseling issue, students from Telangana have received a positive outcome regarding the locality matter. The state government has agreed to allow counseling for students who sought intervention from the high court.
Due to the limited time for counseling, this decision was made to accommodate these students. The Telangana government conveyed this decision to the Supreme Court. The state government had challenged the High Court’s decision on the locality matter in the Supreme Court. A three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, heard the petition.
The state government’s lawyers stated that the students who approached the High Court would be included in the counseling. They also highlighted that there have been four constitutional bench verdicts supporting the issue of locality. Despite the clarity of these verdicts, the matter was brought to court again. Contrary to this argument, the students’ counsel disagreed, reasoning that staying away from the state for just two or three years should not result in losing local status.
The Chief Justice suggested that the state government should express its opinion due to the limited time available to delve into the merits. Responding to this, the state government’s lawyer stated that the decision to allow counseling for the students was made due to current and anticipated time constraints.
The bench has issued notices to all the respondents for further investigation and has ordered a response within three weeks. As a result of the state government’s agreement, the Supreme Court bench has issued an interim order allowing the students who approached the High Court to participate in NEET counseling.
