Democracy’s Vanguard: The Sukumar Sen Story

Production banner Roy Kapur Films, along with Trickitainment Media, announced on Monday that they have acquired the rights to produce a biopic on the life of Sukumar Sen, India’s first Chief Election Commissioner. The announcement comes a day before the vote counting of the 18th general election on Tuesday. Sen, a mathematician-turned-civil servant, oversaw the 1952 Indian general election, which was the first election in the history of independent India.

Producer Siddharth Roy Kapur of Roy Kapur Films said they are honored to bring to life the incredible story of Sen, “one of our national heroes”. He emphasized Sen’s innovative contributions to the democratic process, such as the system of identifying political parties by different symbols and colors to combat illiteracy, and the idea of using indelible ink on fingernails to avoid voter impersonation.

Romanchak Arora from Trickitainment Media stated that Sen’s story is filled with monumental and dramatic moments that will resonate with all Indian citizens who exercise the right to vote. He emphasized that the story, told after 73 years, is a must-see for all generations across the nation.

Sen’s grandson, Sanjiv Sen, credited his grandfather for laying the bedrock for a vibrant electoral process. He expressed his wishes for the producers’ success in portraying the untold story of his unsung hero grandfather. Additionally, Sen’s second grandson, Debdatta Sen, congratulated the producers and wished them success in their endeavor.
