The Delhi High Court has asked the CBI to respond to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail plea in a corruption case related to the alleged excise policy scam.
Justice Neena Bansal Krishna has issued a notice to the CBI on the bail plea and the hearing is scheduled for July 17.
Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, mentioned that Kejriwal is not a flight risk or a terrorist and that he was arrested by the CBI after being granted bail in a money laundering case filed by the ED.
Advocate DP Singh, representing the CBI, raised concerns about Kejriwal approaching the HC directly without filing the bail plea before the trial court.
Kejriwal, who was arrested by the ED on March 21, was granted bail by the trial court in the money laundering case on June 20. However, the high court stayed the trial court’s order.
The excise policy was scrapped in 2022 after the Delhi lieutenant governor ordered a CBI probe into alleged irregularities and corruption in the formulation and execution of the policy.
Both the CBI and the ED allege that irregularities were committed while modifying the excise policy and undue favors were extended to the license holders.
