“Compromise and Contention: Northwestern University Protest Deal”

On Northwestern University’s Deering Meadow, student protesters and supporters demonstrated against the Israel-Hamas war for five days.

However, on Tuesday morning, the meadow was quiet after student organizers and the school announced a deal to curb protest activity.

The agreement includes the creation of a new advisory committee on university investments and other commitments, but some protesters feel it didn’t meet all their original demands.

The agreement allows protests to continue through June 1 but bars all tents except one for aid supplies and requires school permission to use loudspeakers or similar devices.

The deal represents a sustainable and de-escalated path forward, according to Northwestern’s president, provost, and vice president. However, critics say the agreement “succumbed to the demands of a mob” and did little to make Jewish students on campus feel more secure.

Protest organizers plan to continue pressuring administrators and building momentum in support of their movement. Brown University also announced a similar deal to end student protests.
