Lanka Dinakar, Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh TPP and Chief Spokesperson of the BJP, criticized Congress leader and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh for expressing concern over food prices. He pointed out that during the Congress-led UPA government, the Food Price Inflation Rate reached its highest point at 14.72 percent in November 2013,
with average food prices rising by 11.19 percent in 2012-13 and 11.87 percent in 2013-14. Despite this, leaders like Jairam Ramesh are now shedding "crocodile tears" about food prices. Dinakar emphasized that there were no supply chain disruptions during the UPA government, unlike the current scenario impacted by the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. He argued that the UPA government failed to control food prices during its tenure.
In contrast, under Narendra Modi's NDA 1.0 government, the highest food price inflation was 6.53 percent in 2014-15, while the lowest was 0.7 percent in 2018-19. Furthermore, during Modi's NDA 2.0 government, the highest food price increase was capped at 7.70 percent , with the lowest at 4.23 percent due to effective policies.
Currently, under the Modi-led NDA 3.0 government, practical constraints are being addressed through the successful implementation of the Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which supports 80 crore people, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes that provide financial assistance of approximately 4 to 5 lakh crore rupees to beneficiaries. In contrast, the Congress-led UPA did not address the rising living standards and food price inflation effectively. As a result, the "crocodile tears" of Congress leaders will not change the factual data or the public's memory of the challenges faced during their governance.
