AP to launch facial biometric authentication for GST

The Andhra Pradesh Commercial Taxes Department is set to implement facial biometric authentication for Goods and Services Tax (GST) registrations starting January 1, 2025. This innovative system will replace the existing fingerprint and iris scanning mechanisms at its 12 GST Seva Kendras.

A newly developed Android mobile app will facilitate the process, allowing Biometric Authentication Officers to verify taxpayers’ identities through facial recognition technology. This upgrade simplifies the procedure, reducing it from three steps to two: capturing a photograph for face authentication and verifying the required documents.

The initiative aims to curb fraudulent GST registrations, safeguard against fake Input Tax Credit (ITC) claims, and prevent Aadhaar misuse. By leveraging mobile technology, the department eliminates the need for specialised hardware devices, enhancing both accessibility and security.

This transition aligns with the state government’s focus on leveraging digital solutions for effective governance and is expected to set a benchmark for adopting advanced technology in tax administration.
