BRS wins Mahabubnagar MLC by-election

Mahabubnagar MLC

Hyderabad: June 2:  In a significant political development, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) candidate Naveen Kumar Reddy emerged victorious in the Mahabubnagar local bodies constituency MLC by-election, defeating Manne Jeevan Reddy of the ruling Congress party. The election was closely watched, as it was necessitated by the vacancy left by former MLC Kasireddy Narayana Reddy, who recently won as a Congress MLA from Kalwakurthi constituency in the Assembly election.

Out of a total of 1,439 electors, 1,437 voters participated in the polling held on March 28. The defeat of Manne Jeevan Reddy is being seen as a significant setback for the Congress party in the current political scenario. The outcome holds particular significance as Mahabubnagar is the native district of Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.

The victory of Naveen Kumar Reddy was celebrated by the BRS, with many viewing it as a fortuitous gift on the occasion of Telangana Formation Day. Social media buzzed with messages from opposition party supporters highlighting the symbolic nature of the win for the BRS on such a momentous day for the state.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not field a candidate in this by-election, allowing for a direct contest between the BRS and the Congress party. Before the election, worried about the potential defection of their elected representatives, Congress and the BRS moved them to Karnataka, Kerala, and Goa. Despite this, the BRS maintains a commanding majority in the local bodies, having nearly swept the elections in 2019. The election results also provided a boost to the BRS, which had seen many leaders defect to Congress or the BJP.
