Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur criticized the Congress members for carrying books on the Indian Constitution while taking oath in the Lok Sabha. He accused former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of imposing the Emergency in a quest for power, labeling the 1975 Emergency as a dark chapter in Indian democracy.
Thakur stated, “The repressive policies, lust for power, and dictatorial mindset of Congress left an indelible stain on Indian democracy by imposing the Emergency on 25 June 1975.” He cited an international human rights organization’s report, stating that about 140,000 people were imprisoned without trial under the Internal Security Act during the Emergency.
Referring to Indira Gandhi, Thakur said, “The ego of one family and one person was prioritized over national interest. Indira Gandhi repeatedly obtained ordinances from the President to sustain the Emergency, bypassing the Parliament.”
Thakur commended the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for its resistance against the Emergency and its nationwide protests against the violation of citizens’ freedom and fundamental rights. He also criticized Indira Gandhi for attempting to control the judicial system and for not resigning even after a court order.
