Chairman of the YSRCP NTR district Doctors Wing Dr. Ambati Naga Radhakrishna Yadav, has alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government's lack of commitment in defending Government Order 56 (GO 56) before the High Court has resulted in a ruling that favors private medical colleges over aspiring students. GO 56, introduced during the Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government, sought to regulate postgraduate (PG) medical course fees in private colleges based on the recommendations of the
Andhra Pradesh Higher Education Regulatory and Monitoring Committee (APHER&MC). “Between 2014 and 2019, private medical colleges' fees surged by 200 per cent under the previous TDP regime. GO 56 aimed to reverse this trend and ensure fair opportunities for students,” said Dr. Yadav. However, the High Court's recent judgment canceling GO 56 has created uncertainty, with concerns over potential fee hikes making medical education unaffordable for students, especially those from backward classes and economically weaker sections (EWS). Radhakrishna criticized the government's omission of GO 56's merits during court arguments, which he claimed led to the current situation. He emphasized the adverse impact of the ruling on medical PG aspirants and warned of the widening of educational inequality in the state. He demanded that the government clarify why it failed to present the benefits of GO 56 in court.
“The government must ensure that GO 56 is upheld, even if it requires legislative intervention. If private colleges increase fees, the government should bear the additional burden to protect students from exploitation,” he asserted. The YSRCP Doctors Wing has called for measures to regulate private medical colleges, ensure adherence to APHER&MC guidelines, and uphold social justice principles in medical education
