A delegation of YSRCP Members of Parliament approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday, raising concerns about alleged human rights violations against social media activists in Andhra Pradesh. The MPs met with NHRC acting chairperson Vijaya Bharati, alleging illegal arrests, police torture, and infringement on freedom of expression of YSRCP-affiliated social media workers.
The MPs claimed that these activists are being subjected to custodial torture and called the use of Section 111 of the Organized Crime Act against them “disturbing.” They highlighted the case of Peddireddy Sudharani and her husband, Venkata Reddy, who were reportedly detained for four days. The MPs urged the NHRC to investigate and intervene to protect human rights and democratic freedoms, expressing dissatisfaction with the AP police’s response, particularly the DGP’s handling of these cases.
Among the delegation were YSRCP MPs Y.V. Subbareddy, Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose, Meda Raghunath Reddy, Dr. Tanuja Rani, and Baburao. In a related development, Pulivendula police have filed SC/ST cases against YSRCP social media activists, including MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy’s PA, Raghavareddy, and district convener Vivekananda Reddy. Complaints were lodged by a Hari from Simhadripuram mandal, leading police to pursue further arrests. SC/ST cases have also been filed against Sajjala Bhargav Reddy and Arjun Reddy, a relative of former CM Jagan Reddy, indicating escalating tensions over alleged violations.
