New Liquor Policy Drives High Sales in Andhra Pradesh
Liquor sales in Andhra Pradesh have surged significantly following the implementation of the state’s new liquor policy
Liquor sales in Andhra Pradesh have surged significantly following the implementation of the state’s new liquor policy. In just 55 days since the policy came into effect, liquor worth ₹4,677 crore has been sold, according to the state’s Excise Department.
Under the previous YSR Congress Party administration, liquor sales were conducted through government-run outlets. However, the newly formed coalition government has exited the liquor business, reverting to a privatized model. The state issued tenders and allocated liquor shops to private individuals through a lottery system.
Since October 16, 2024, liquor sales have been operational across 3,300 retail outlets in Andhra Pradesh. As of December 9, 2024, the Excise Department reported the sale of 61.63 lakh liquor cases, including 19.33 lakh cases of beer.
Meanwhile, liquor shop owners are demanding a 20% commission, asserting that they would face financial losses without this provision. Discussions on the commission issue are ongoing within the state.
