Earthquakes have occurred once more in Andhra Pradesh. Today (Saturday), tremors were felt in the Darsi constituency. The ground shook for about two seconds in Darsi, Mundlamuru, Tallur, and Kurichedu mandals, causing people to rush out of their homes in fear.
Additionally, on December 4, brief earthquakes were registered in the joint Krishna District. These tremors were detected at 7:20 AM and scientists identified the epicenter as the Mulugu district in Telangana. The seismic activity was measured at a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale and originated 200-300 kilometers beneath the surface.
In the past, the Geological Survey of India has divided the country into five seismic zones, with both Telugu states classified in Zone 2. The earthquake in Mulugu affected the entire Krishna District, with tremors felt in Nandigama, Jaggayyapeta, Mylavaram, Vijayawada city, Hanuman Junction, Machilipatnam, Gudivada, Penuganchiprol, Kanchikacherla, and Veerulapadu mandals. In Rajupeta of the Thiruvur mandal, cracks appeared in the walls of houses due to the shaking. CCTV cameras captured the tremors, showing clear movement of the ground, particularly in a street in Hanuman Junction. In Gampalagudem, pots were dislodged from the walls.
*Not Everything is an Accident: Scientists Weigh In*
While residents in coastal areas have panicked during these tremors in the past, the situation generally returned to normal after a brief period. Some scientists suggest there is no cause for alarm regarding these tremors, while others warn that more significant seismic events may be imminent. Physicists believe there is minimal risk for areas in Zone 2 and predict that similar incidents might occur in the next two to three months. They assert that tremors in Zone 2 tend not to exceed 6.0 to 6.05 on the Richter scale.
